You may not know but my first business was a little bead shop.The walls were turquoise blue lined with shelves of beads and it was called “Beden” ( which I thought was a bit clever) Most people just said they were at the bead shop or Kimmy’s .It started as a hobby that had invaded the kitchen table and I took a leap of faith setting up shop in a foreign country. My first red lipstick was a gift from my mum, duty free (Thats when it really was duty free) It was Chanel, very posh for a country girl .I remember the black and gold packaging it was so elegant. The great thing about red lipstick is it makes you feel brave and implies confidence even if your unsure.Its the colour of passion, energy and danger .😇 My friends used to joke that if a woman had lipstick on her teeth it was the sign of a crazy woman .I may or may not have had lippy on my teeth ! Little artist’s in the making. This week I had the pleasure to host a creative workshop for two groups of 10 five year olds. The event was sponsored by our local EKI bank and a real treat for the locals .The kids painted and decorated wooden mountain goat heads ( Steinbock ) using chalk paint, bottle tops, buttons, pompoms, cupcake papers, and a bit of seasonal bling. When I left Queenstown my luggage was overweight and I was faced into frantic sorting session at the check-in .My friend who has come to wave me off was helping pulling random items out of my bike box,asking “Keep or leave?” Among them was the cat blackboard. “Keep,” I said without hesitation. She gave me a puzzled look, “Why?” I just laughed, knowing I couldn’t part with it. That cat blackboard made the journey with me, only to end up sitting in my cellar for years. I’d just hung up painting in the workshop, to get it out of the way—the paint was barely dry. Little did I know this would be the start of a new passion Petra walked in and immediately spotted the painting and asked if it was for sale. I hadn’t thought about selling and assumed she was being polite. I was thrilled she loved it and she persisted until I put a price on it !! We both realized the painting actually had a striking resemblance to her too .Today, she proudly owns that painting, a piece that both surprised and encouraged me. If a bird sits on your shoulder it’s a sign of trust and that it feels safe . I don’t think I’ve had a bird sit on me but I’ve got a funny bird story. I was in Turkey buying beads and jewelry for my shop.I was taking a long time to choose and the assistants kept pointing towards the mirror when I liked something .I smiled and waved them off “ It’s ok I don’t need to look at it in the mirror “ this went on for hours.Eventually they couldn’t bear it anymore and an assistant dragged me to the mirror and shyly pointed to my hair .I had remembered walking past a tree in the morning and what I thought was a leaf had dropped on my head .Well it wasn’t a leaf, a bird had pooped on my head .I couldn’t stop laughing much to everyone’s relief ( they could finally have a giggle too). I had so much fun transforming this buffet into a true jewel 💎, now it’s a stunning sideboard! I combined two amazing paint brands for the perfect look. The base is Capri Pink by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, with a striking Frida Blue interior. Then I added a layer of Love Language from Debi’s Design DIY (Did I say love 🩷).
